The project
Investigating the Online Visibility of University Innovation
Moving beyond traditional indicators of innovation, VisiPAT examines how patented academic knowledge is disseminated, referenced, and engaged with across online environments, including websites, platforms, and other digital spaces.
Understanding the Social Impact of University Innovation
Project Objectives
- To identify how university patents are disseminated and referenced across online platforms and digital environments.
- To apply altmetric and webometric indicators to measure patterns of attention, connectivity, and engagement.
- To support new perspectives for evaluating the impact of university-based technological knowledge.
- To explore the relationship between patent visibility and the broader communication of academic innovation.
From data to insights on patent visibility
Research Methodology
VisiPAT adopts an analytical approach based on the combined use of altmetric and webometric methods to study the digital and social visibility of university patents. The project examines how patents are mentioned, linked, and discussed across online environments, including institutional websites, digital platforms, and other web-based sources.
Through the collection and analysis of web data, VisiPAT identifies patterns of attention, connectivity, and dissemination that help characterize the online presence of patented academic innovation. This methodological framework allows the project to move beyond traditional evaluation indicators and to capture the broader social dimension of university patents within the digital ecosystem.
